The Mennonite World Conference Assembly in Ethiopia is postponed to a different date and country.
Due to an internal crisis of unity, Meserete Kristos Church (MKC) has sorrowfully withdrawn their invitation to host the MWC Assembly. Their need to focus on internal unity makes it difficult to dedicate the attention needed to prepare for global visitors in 2028.
“MWC Assemblies are meant to be a blessing for our churches. If they become a burden during a crisis, we should reconsider moving forward with plans,” says César García, MWC general secretary.
“We have appreciated the hard work MKC leaders have already invested in planning for this upcoming event,” says Liesa Unger, chief international events officer. “The love they have shown us through this generous invitation has inspired us. We grieve the untimely end of this process.”
“We are all MWC: the act of churches choosing to seek a path of unity and identity across difference is what gives us life. There are differences which challenge our unity as we meet together as churches, but we want to persevere in the love of Christ for all who claim the name of Jesus in the Anabaptist faith,” says César García, general secretary.
“Our desire is to uphold unity in Christ while remaining faithful to the biblical convictions entrusted to us. We pray for God’s wisdom and discernment as we walk together through these challenging matters,” says Desalegn Abebe Ejo, MKC president, in a letter to MWC.
“We invite your prayers for the unity of MKC, the leaders of MWC who are discerning a new plan for our next Assembly, and for the entire global Anabaptist communion in 61 countries around the world as each struggle with their own polarities and trials,” says César García.
More news about the next Assembly will follow in the coming weeks.
Please pray with us….
Lord God,
Jesus commanded us to love one another as you have loved us (John 15:12). He prayed in the garden that you would protect us from the evil one who seeks to divide us and to steal our joy (John 17:15). Thank you for the example of Christ, our peace, who broke down the dividing wall and hostility between us (Ephesians 2:14).
May we submit our differences to Christ who draws them together to build a holy temple for God (Ephesians 2:22).
May we abide in you (John 15:4), our life-giving source, connected to the many branches of your fruit-bearing work in the world through churches of every size and shape.
Amen.
