Lee fue condenado a dieciocho meses de prisi\u00f3n al negarse, por razones de su fe, a cumplir el servicio militar obligatorio.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan un informe de Kyong-Jung Kim, Lee fue liberado el 30 de julio de 2015, tras cumplir s\u00f3lo quince meses de su condena. Kim es representante del noreste de Asia para el Congreso Mundial Menonita y director del Centro Anabautista de Corea, un ministerio de las iglesias anabautistas de Corea del Sur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEl poder de nuestras oraciones permiti\u00f3 que Sang-Min soportara las penurias de la vida en prisi\u00f3n\u201d, dijo Kim v\u00eda correo electr\u00f3nico al anunciar la excarcelaci\u00f3n de Lee.<\/p>\n<p>Kim explic\u00f3 que Lee fue liberado tres meses antes debido a su trabajo voluntario en prisi\u00f3n. \u201cTrabaj\u00f3 como peluquero y por eso recibi\u00f3 un trato relativamente bueno, pero sobre todo, estuvo constantemente presente en nuestras oraciones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert (Jack) Suderman, secretario de la Comisi\u00f3n de Paz del CMM, expres\u00f3 gratitud por el testimonio fiel de Lee ante una situaci\u00f3n dif\u00edcil. \u201cSu historia fue inspiradora para la Asamblea del CMM en Pennsylvania este a\u00f1o\u201d, manifest\u00f3 Suderman.<\/p>\n<p>En especial, ha sido una gran inspiraci\u00f3n para los participantes de la Cumbre Mundial de la Juventud; se supo que los j\u00f3venes prepararon un libro con mensajes de aliento para Lee.<\/p>\n<p>Kim se\u00f1ala que aunque Lee ya no est\u00e9 encarcelado, haberse negado a aceptar el servicio militar impuesto por el gobierno de Corea del Sur tendr\u00e1 consecuencias   permanentes. Lee tiene ahora antecedentes penales que le impedir\u00e1n conseguir empleo en muchas empresas y en dependencias del gobierno. <\/p>\n<p>Adem\u00e1s, afrontar\u00e1 el desaf\u00edo que significa el rechazo de quienes no apoyan la objeci\u00f3n de conciencia, que incluye a muchos cristianos coreanos, que no consideran el servicio militar incompatible con su fe.<\/p>\n<p>Debido al servicio militar obligatorio que se hace cumplir con rigor y sin opci\u00f3n alguna de servicio alternativo, Corea del Sur tiene el \u00edndice m\u00e1s alto de encarcelamiento de objetores de conciencia del mundo.
