{"id":99361,"date":"2024-12-15T07:59:47","date_gmt":"2024-12-15T07:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/?p=99361"},"modified":"2025-10-17T19:34:47","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T19:34:47","slug":"the-road-and-the-destination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/en\/stories\/the-road-and-the-destination\/","title":{"rendered":"The road and the destination\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t know where you\u2019re going, any road will take you there.\u201d This saying summarizes one of the ideas from Lewis Carroll\u2019s classic children\u2019s tale, <em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em>. Having a <em>road<\/em> and defining your <em>destination<\/em> is crucial if you want to arrive there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a biblical version of that saying in Proverbs 11:14: \u201cWhere there is no guidance, a nation falls\u201d (NRSVue). <em>Guidance, direction, road, destination<\/em> \u2013 all those words are implied in another word that is sometimes misunderstood and historically problematic but with plenty of theological content: <em>mission<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the book <strong><em>God\u2019s People in Mission: An Anabaptist Perspective<\/em><\/strong>, I define <em>mission<\/em> as <em>everything the church is and does,<\/em> <em>bearing witness to Jesus Christ in her ministry of reconciliation<\/em>. Let me expand this definition a bit more:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Everything that the church <\/em><strong><em>is<\/em><\/strong><em> and <\/em><strong><em>does<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The church<strong> <\/strong><em>is<\/em> a foretaste of the Kingdom of God.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The church as a message implies her very <em>presence<\/em>. Any mission that is not communal and interdependent is weak.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The church does not have a message. She <em>is<\/em> the message.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The church\u2019s presence announces the gospel of <em>Jesus Christ<\/em> through <em>words<\/em> and <em>deeds<\/em>, thus promoting <em>reconciliation.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The church\u2019s action in its testimonial work includes<strong> <\/strong><em>everything <\/em>it does: worship, pastoral care, teaching, evangelism, service, peacebuilding and health ministries, among other things. What the church does or does not do, and how it does it, is part of its message.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>bear<\/em><em>s<\/em><em> <\/em><strong><em>witness<\/em><\/strong><em> to <\/em><strong><em>Jesus Christ<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Through its words and deeds, the community\u2019s <em>message<\/em> is delivered as a <em>witness<\/em>, affirming their experience and testimonial knowledge. This implies an approach that is not imperialist (as if they were the master and keeper of the absolute truth) and is not delivered from positions of human power. Instead, it is sharing \u201cfrom below,\u201d with steadfast humility, our faith experience.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The message is about <em>Jesus Christ<\/em>, so it must be communicated from a position of <em>vulnerability<\/em> and <em>service<\/em>, just as Jesus did. This requires sacrificial surrender and a cruciform lifestyle that practices ministerial strategies consistent with Christ\u2019s life and work.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Considering the divine <em>incarnation<\/em><strong> <\/strong>and Christ\u2019s <em>identification <\/em>with discriminated persons, bearing witness to Jesus requires a serious contextualization of the message and an intentional identification with those excluded, ignored or victimized by society.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>in her ministry of<\/em><strong><em> reconciliation<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ministry of reconciliation has been <em>entrusted to the church<\/em><strong>. <\/strong>This implies that the new life in the <em>community, <\/em>thanks to the Spirit<em>,<\/em> makes it possible to experience reconciliation with God and among humans.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ministry of reconciliation seeks not only the salvation of the soul in the distant future but also the re-establishment of a<em>n entire relationship<\/em> with the<strong> <\/strong><em>Spirit of God <\/em>and<em> <\/em>a life of <em>just<\/em><strong> <\/strong><em>relationships<\/em> which allow us to enjoy the <em>peace<\/em> which the same Spirit makes possible in the new <em>creation<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From an Anabaptist perspective, how you arrive at your destination \u2013 the <em>road<\/em> \u2013 is crucial. That is why our understanding and practice of mission are so important. At Mennonite World Conference (MWC), we want to organize ourselves (structure) and our work (road) in a way that shows what we understand by <em>mission<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MWC Mission Commission brings together a network of agencies from all over the world to work interdependently in a multicultural way. By belonging to the Mission (GMF) and Service (GASN) networks of the MWC Mission Commission, agencies affirm their identity as church organizations, as missional expressions of the church. Through their work, they bear witness to Christ in several areas of specialized ministry, such as church planting and social development. That is what this issue of <em>Courier<\/em> is about.
