A tree was left behind in remembrance.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mennonite World Conference has a tradition to plant tree on the grounds of a Mennonite institution when the Executive Committee meets: \u201cin honour of God\u2019s creation and the church universal.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2023, after an informative tour with executive director Richard Thiessen, MWC <a href=\"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/en\/general-council\">Executive Committee<\/a> members and other staff guests gathered on the grounds of the museum to plant a maple tree.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMay creation find ways to resurrect and may we take our responsibilities to care for God\u2019s creation,\u201d prayed Henk Stenvers, MWC president, in the dedication of the tree.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During 1997 Executive Committee meetings, then-general secretary Larry Miller suggested that a tree be planted wherever these meetings took place.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, trees have been planted in the following places:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1999<\/strong>: a yellow bamboo at GKMI synod office, Semarang, Indonesia. Unfortunately, this tree had to be removed during the campus renovations in 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2001<\/strong>: Thomashof Mennonite retreat centre in Karlsruhe, Germany.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2002<\/strong>: Mpopoma BIC Church, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, at a ceremony attended by hundreds.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2004<\/strong>: Eglise Mennonite Bourg-Bruche \/ Le Hang, Molsheim, France. This is close to the \u201cMennonite tree\u201d at Le Salm, France, planted in 1793 in recognition of Jakob Kupferschmitt\u2019s efforts to secure exemption from military service for Anabaptists during the French Revolution.\u00a0After a fire in 2015, the tree was cut down during the reconstruction of the church building. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2005<\/strong>: On the campus of Conrad Grebel College in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The red maple was later discovered to be in poor health, so several former MWC staff funded its replacement with a Japanese maple in 2021. A white pine, a symbol of peace to Indigenous peoples in Ontario, was planted at the Mennonite Central committee Kitchener property where MWC also has offices.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2007<\/strong>: On the grounds of Iglesia Principe de Paz, a General Conference church and Mennoniten Br\u00fcder Gemeinde Concordia \/ Iglesia Hermanos Menonitas Concordia (Concordia Mennonite Brethren Church). in Asuncion, Paraguay. A fourth tree was later planted in the Chaco.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2008:<\/strong> In the 2008 meeting in the Philippines, president-elect Danisa Ndluvo (above, right) and president Nancy Heisey plant a kamias tree (<em>averrhoa bilimbi<\/em>) at the Lumban Mennonite Bible Church, the mother church for several other congregations in the area, according to Bishop Ambrocio Porcincula. To make this tree-planting possible, Lumban members needed to dig a hole in the concrete patio surrounding the entrance to their structure. (cf <a href=\"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/en\/resources\/courier-2008-3\/\"><em>Courier\/Correo\/Courrier<\/em> 2008 \/ 23.3<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2010<\/strong>: 38 trees at Misrak Meserete Kristos Church, Ethiopia.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2013<\/strong>: Mennonite Central Committee Welcoming Place, Akron, Pennsylvania, USA.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2023<\/strong>: Maple tree planted at Mennonite Heritage Museum, Abbotsford, B.C., Canada.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2023<\/strong>: Tree planted with Mesere Kristos Church leadership in Ethiopia. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2025<\/strong>: Linden tree planted at Sch\u00f6nblick, Sch\u00e4bisch-Gm\u00fcnd, Germany. <em>(updated 2025)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrees are a rich source of symbolism: the remind us of the many branches of the global Anabaptist-Mennonite family; they leave behind an organic memento of a visit from MWC; they speak to our commitment to creation care,\u201d says C\u00e9sar Garc\u00eda, MWC general secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"display: inline-block;\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/whatsapp_image_2023-06-20_at_01.03.20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"250\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 188px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 188\/250;\">\n<figcaption>Tree at&nbsp;Thomashof Mennonite retreat centre in Karlsruhe, Germany.
