Now a Mennonite has been appointed to represent the World Council of Churches (WCC) in government peace talks.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The peace process signed in 2016 continues to advance. New president Gustavo Petro drafted a \u201cTotal Peace\u201d policy to end armed conflict, improve public security in the countryside and increase rural development. His reforms include several Roundtables of Dialogue between the government and Ej\u00e9rcito de Liberaci\u00f3n Nacional (national liberation army). &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/oikoumene.org\/\">World Council of Churches<\/a> has been invited into that process (as an observer). WCC appointed Mennonite theologian Fernando Enns from Brazil and Germany as one of their representatives.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"float:right\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"150\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/rev._prof._dr_fernando_enns.jpeg\" width=\"135\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 135px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 135\/150;\"><figcaption>Fernando Enns<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAlthough Mennonites from Germany and the Netherlands are among the smallest member churches in terms of numbers, the international fellowship of churches honours our strong \u2018peace with justice\u2019 witness through the decades,\u201d says Fernando Enns. \u201cMennonites represent an unbiased commitment to a Christian discipleship of non-violent peacebuilding and reconciliation. We bear a great responsibility here.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe appointment of Mennonite peace scholar Fernando Enns as the WCC representative is an acknowledgement of the theological and practical gifts of peacemaking that Anabaptist-Mennonites bring to the worldwide church and a recognition of the enormous impact that Fernando\u2019s ministry has had in the WCC for several years,\u201d says MWC general secretary C\u00e9sar Garc\u00eda.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy prayer is that the nominated international observers of the WCC (and the UN) will be able to strengthen and support the commitment to \u201cpeace for all\u201d in Colombia. May we be able to critically monitor the path of justice towards a sustainable peace, so that the process does not degenerate to a cheap reconciliation.
