{"id":7889,"date":"2021-11-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-28T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/when-the-wicked-prosper\/"},"modified":"2024-12-06T02:35:27","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T02:35:27","slug":"when-wicked-prosper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/en\/stories\/when-wicked-prosper\/","title":{"rendered":"When the wicked prosper"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Take refuge in the Lord<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>This devotional is inspired by the question \u201cWhat now?\u201d as church leaders assess the changes that have come about due to COVID-19. <\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Psalm 73 reflects the understandable frustration when the expectations of Psalm 1 do not pan out in lived experience.<\/p>\n<p>Here the psalmist sees the \u201cprosperity (<em>shalom<\/em>) of the <em>wicked<\/em>\u201d rather than the \u2018righteous.\u2019 Their \u2018peace\u2019 is comprehensive and \u2018in your face\u2019 \u2013 they are physically healthy, well-fed and do not suffer problems. To make matters worse, they don\u2019t hide their wickedness but are full of pride and \u201cthreaten oppression,\u201d multiplying their wealth while others suffer.<\/p>\n<p>In short, exactly those whose way should \u201cperish\u201d (Psalm 1:6) are not only doing well, but lording it over others. The world is upside down\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The psalmist despairs. Like Job, he wonders whether there was no point in keeping his \u201cheart clean\u201d or being innocent. Despite his best efforts, the predictable reward that Psalm 1 suggests simply isn\u2019t happening; it\u2019s not fair!<\/p>\n<p>The striking change of perspective, his moment of reorientation, occurs upon entering the sanctuary (vs 17).<\/p>\n<p>He is convinced that the prosperity of the wicked is temporary; he still hopes that they will stumble, but it might take a while. Even more importantly, no longer is the LORD seen as \u2018Santa Claus,\u2019 who punishes the \u2018naughty\u2019 and rewards the \u2018nice\u2019; relationship with God has become its own reward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhom have I in heaven but you?<br \/>\nAnd there is nothing on earth that I desire other than you,\u201d (Psalm 73:25).<\/p>\n<p>Though the psalmist does not completely move away from a retributive mindset (v. 27 repeats the conviction that \u201cthose who are far from you will perish\u201d), the determining factor now has become relational (one\u2019s nearness or distance from God). Rather than being envious of the prosperity of the wicked, as at the outset, the psalmist revels in a closer relationship with God.<\/p>\n<p>The final claim underscores a crucial motif in the Psalms, often linked to prayer itself (compare with Psalm 2:11; 91:2). The act of coming to God, in frustration and even anger, represents a key way of \u201ctaking refuge\u201d in the LORD.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014An MWC article by W.
