(1 Peter 3\u20139),\u201d she said during evening worship 22 July 2015 at Assembly 16 in Harrisburg, Pa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we struggle with fear or anxiety, our hearts shrink, Kaga said. Mercy is like an iron: not too hot or too cold, but \u201cexactly the right temperature for us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the work of the Holy Spirit,\u201d she said. \u201cIt irons our shrunken heart . . . many times again and again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mercy is also like a shield, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur faith hasn\u2019t disappeared because of God\u2019s shield,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is our Christian hope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJesus\u2019 death has swallowed death in victory,\u201d she said in closing. \u201cThis is the work of God\u2019s great power.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kaga is the pastor of several congregations, including Japan Mennonite Obihiro Christ Church and small churches in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido. She serves as secretary of her conference\u2019s executive committee, at the Mennonite Education and Research Center and as chief director of the Peace Mission Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A graduate of Eastern Mennonite Seminary, Harrisonburg, Virginia, with a degree in pastoral counselling, Yukari also holds an M.Div. from Tokyo Biblical Seminary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before Kaga\u2019s message, Larry Miller, former MWC General Secretary, and Anne-Cathy Graber of Paris, France, brought greetings from the Global Christian Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monsignor Gregory Fairbanks of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania., also gave a message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The worship service began with music from Indonesia, Japan, India and more. The service ended with an upbeat rendition of \u201cWhen the Saints Go Marching In.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Anna Groff is executive director of <\/em>The Mennonite<em>.
