{"id":6746,"date":"2018-07-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/the-holy-spirit-transforms-prison\/"},"modified":"2024-12-10T18:40:30","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T18:40:30","slug":"holy-spirit-transforms-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/en\/stories\/holy-spirit-transforms-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"The Holy Spirit transforms prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cMy members are rapists, kidnappers, murders and fraudsters \u2013 all washed by the blood of Jesus our Lord,\u201d says pastor Ignacio Chamorro Ram\u00edrez.<\/p>\n<p>Chamorro is director of an integrated transformation program and pastor of La Libertad (\u201cfreedom\u201d) church in Paraguay\u2019s overcrowded Tacumb\u00fa national penitentiary \u2013 but he was once a prisoner like the men he serves.<\/p>\n<p>Chamorro\u2019s life is a testament to Holy Spirit transformation.<\/p>\n<p>His youth spent on the streets without supervision led to bad decisions. At age 19, Chamorro went to prison for robbery for 20 days. \u201cIt was a traumatic experience, but made no change in my life,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>A few years later, Chamorro was imprisoned \u201cfor a crime I didn\u2019t commit. I wasn\u2019t charged for the one I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Resentment and bitterness grew in his heart, but he rejected any invitation to church.<\/p>\n<p>One day, he went with friend to study math. \u201cThe person leading talked about God, but I had nothing else to do so I stayed,\u201d he says. \u201cThere, God touched my heart. Something new began in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was his introduction to La Libertad: a church inside the prison. \u201cI learned about benefit of discipleship,&#8230; was baptized, and began to do for others what they had done for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he was released, he finished high school, studied theology at Instituto B\u00edblico Asunci\u00f3n, and has worked with La Libertad since 2012.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Inmates in Asuncion\u2019s infamous Tacumbu prison participate in La Libertad church, a ministry of the Mennonite Brethren church in Paraguay. For more than a decade, the ministry of justice has had an agreement with the congregation to manage this area with 535 of the 3290 inmates in the prison. Some 130 are committed members of the church.<\/p>\n<p>The church-run program in the prison emphasizes spirituality and education. It offers literacy and work skills: \u201cIt provides opportunity to recover dignity, economic freedom,\u201d says Chamorro, \u201cand, most importantly, to grow and develop the person\u2019s life in Christ, and to continue to journey in love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGod has power. God changes people,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Chamorro shared his story at the triennial meeting of the<a href=\"http:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/node\/3523\"> Global Mission Fellowship (GMF) <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/node\/3525\">Global Anabaptist Service Network<\/a> in Kenya in April 2018.
