{"id":6545,"date":"2016-01-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/healing-wounds-through-art-a-yamen-experience\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T20:12:36","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T20:12:36","slug":"healing-wounds-through-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/en\/stories\/healing-wounds-through-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Healing wounds through art"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A YAMEN experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bogot\u00e1, Colombia \u2013 For Keila Viana, seeing how art can heal wounds deepened her understanding of God and his love during her international service in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe that during this time God worked a lot in my life,\u201d says Viana, a 22-year-old young adult from the Iglesia Evang\u00e9lica Menonita Camino de Santidad, in Honduras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty-two young people, including Viana, participated in the YAMEN program August 2014 to July 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/en\/yabs-committee\/yamen\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"11440\">YAMEN<\/a>, a joint program between <a href=\"https:\/\/mcc.org\">Mennonite Central Committee<\/a> (MCC) and Mennonite World Conference, is for young adults, ages 18\u201330, who are not Canadian or U.S. citizens. The participants must attend an Anabaptist church in their own country or serve an Anabaptist organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let us create<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Viana worked with Let Us Create, an organization that uses art to invite children at risk to heal the wounds that have marked their little hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She focused on teaching art and violin lessons, though at times she also taught English and assisted with preparing a festival event. A paint brush and a musical instrument helped to draw smiles of hope from adults and children and together carried on a tune for a better tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGod taught me to rely solely on him, and his love is more than enough,\u201d says Viana. \u201cNow I am not afraid of whatever may come in the future because I know it is God who directs my steps and gives me the strength to keep going even in the midst of trials.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only her life changed, but also her thinking; Viana has learned to see God as a being full of love and mercy. Now she is getting ready to continue her studies and to fulfill the great commission in her country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viana has decided to use the tools she acquired through YAMEN in her church. She will use her free time to help children in her country, teaching them English and music. \u201cI have learned to love with the love that Jesus Christ has put in me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as Viana\u2019s life changed, many young people who have dared to make a difference in this program have stories to tell about the satisfaction one can find in serving God and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-soft-gray-background-color has-background\">Let us pray for the lives of the 20 young people who are carrying the message of peace to 13 different countries in 2015\u20132016. As a church, we send them our love and support.
