{"id":6388,"date":"2014-11-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/garcia-calls-for-mission-from-below-amidst-shifting-global-realities\/"},"modified":"2024-12-10T18:38:24","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T18:38:24","slug":"garca-calls-mission-below-amidst-shifting-global-realities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/en\/stories\/garca-calls-mission-below-amidst-shifting-global-realities\/","title":{"rendered":"Garc\u00eda calls for &#8216;mission from below&#8217; amidst shifting global realities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chicago, Illinois, USA \u2013 \u201cWhat would happen if, following the example of monastic orders, there would be a \u2018vow of poverty\u2019 in multicultural mission teams for everyone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This question, posed by C\u00e9sar Garc\u00eda at the 22 January annual consultation of the Council of International Anabaptist Ministries (CIM), focused one of his proposals for how North American mission agencies might respond to shifting global realities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome attempts at a cooperative model between North American agencies and south agencies have failed because of huge financial disparities among members of the same team,\u201d noted Garc\u00eda of Bogot\u00e1, Colombia, General Secretary of Mennonite World Conference (MWC).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn Anabaptist emphasis on simplicity as a requirement for each member of the team regardless of the country of origin could help us to avoid many problems,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>This call for a new style of missionary presence \u2013 also referred to as \u201cmission from below\u201d \u2013 capped several presentations by Garc\u00eda at the CIM consultation, which brought together representatives from North American mission and service agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The theme for the day was: What is the place of the North American mission agency amidst shifting realities in the global context? The consultation this year was held in part as preparation for the next MWC Assembly scheduled for 21-26 July 2015 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>In one presentation, Garc\u00eda described a number of realities for the global Anabaptist community of around 1.7 million members.<\/p>\n<p>A theological reality is the primary influence of Pentecostalism in the global south. Garc\u00eda expressed concern \u201cabout \u2018romantic\u2019 views in North America which equate global south Pentecostalism with Anabaptism\u201d and overlook problems created by strong, divisive leaders who emphasize a \u201cprosperity gospel\u201d rather than a gospel of peace and justice and Christ crucified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&nbsp; need to avoid both \u2018Charismania\u2019 and \u2018Charisphobia\u2019\u2026. We need both Anabaptist and Pentecostal values and commitment,\u201d said Garc\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>An ecclesiastical reality is that many emerging churches still have relationships with mission agencies rather than directly with other churches. Garc\u00eda emphasized the importance of church-to-church relationships both for the supporting and the emerging church.<\/p>\n<p>To highlight geographical realities, Garc\u00eda presented maps which show that the majority of mission workers being sent outside of their own country are from the global north. The maps also show the growth of churches and mission activity in the global south, where churches have fewer resources and where the mission reach tends to be local rather than global.<\/p>\n<p>In a second presentation, Garc\u00eda proposed ways in which North American agencies might respond. He called for more interdependency. \u201cAgencies must speak with each other or the witness is negatively impacted,\u201d he emphasized. He also called for a commitment to holistic mission. \u201cThe implicitly received message in the south in the past has been that service and mission agencies can\u2019t work together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He concluded his final presentation with the proposal to take a fresh look at the \u201cmissional monastic roots of Anabaptism.\u201d He commented further: \u201cAnabaptist agencies have followed protestant patterns of missions for many years.
