My first memory of Mennonite World Conference was the Assembly in Wichita, Kansas, USA in 1978. I was in a theatre production, Cheyenne Jesus Buffalo Dream<\/em>, that was featured in the Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My overwhelming memory is experiencing the global family for the first time \u2013 so many Anabaptists from all over the world! That experience was truly a blessing and it helped to shape my understanding of the church from that time on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tithed time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 1997, I became the associate general secretary of the Mennonite Church General Board in the USA, and several years later, the associate executive director of the newly formed Mennonite Church USA. Shortly after the formation of MC USA, the executive director Jim Schrag granted my request to tithe my staff time to Mennonite World Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My thinking was that a North American Mennonite body should be assisting MWC in its task of leading our global church, but I quickly learned that, in volunteering I was receiving much more than I was giving. As I heard stories from our sisters and brothers in other parts of the world, I was encouraged and inspired in my own ministry! As I shared from my own experiences, I learned so much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During my volunteer years, I served in a variety of volunteer communications roles. One memory I have is helping to guide the creation of MWC\u2019s new multicoloured visual identity (logo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During these years, I also spent a three-month sabbatical in Strasbourg, France assisting Larry and Eleanor Miller. It was a joy living in their home, walking the several kilometres to the MWC office each day and experiencing the administrative work of MWC up close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Service network development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2010, I became the executive director of Mennonite Central Committee U.S. and I continued volunteering with MWC. One early task was helping to give shape to the Global Anabaptist Service Network (GASN). I served as chair and vice chair for virtually all of my 10 years with MCC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At my first MWC meeting in Addis Ababa as MCC U.S. executive director, I personally experienced the love and care of our MWC global church leaders. During the meeting, when we heard about the death of an MCC worker in Afghanistan, they surrounded MCC leaders in prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I retired from MCC in 2020, I continued my MWC journey: first as volunteer development consultant, then as an interim development director and, lastly, as the director of commissions. Throughout these years of volunteer and staff work, I have formed friendships that will last for many years to come!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guiding and shaping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Throughout my professional career with Mennonite organizations, MWC has given me a grounding in the global church, guiding and shaping me, and that has influenced my work with Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Central Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am grateful for the wise counsel of my sisters and brothers in other global Anabaptist bodies. I\u2019m encouraged to see the role MWC has played in nurturing the global Anabaptist churches and our collective witness in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we grieve the fracturing of the church in North America, MWC gives me hope that our global church can truly be about the work of following Jesus, living out unity and building peace. May it be so!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
