It is more than sympathy (\u201cI feel sorry for you\u201d) or empathy (\u201cI understand how you feel\u201d). Solidarity says, \u201cI will stand with you.\u201d It is the willingness to bear one another\u2019s burdens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our church has recently studied the text from Matthew 9:9\u201313. It gives us a clear picture of this Christ\u2011shaped solidarity. Jesus does not save from a distance. He enters humanity and sits at the table with tax collectors and sinners. He stands with those others avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As John Stott observed, the cross first reveals God\u2019s identification with sinners before it reveals God\u2019s judgment against sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solidarity is the witness of Incarnation itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My local congregation Maranatha has tasted this grace. When our Indonesian\u2011American congregation began worshipping alongside immigrants from diverse ethnicities, we discovered that solidarity is not a program but a table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We listened to stories of displacement, shared meals, prayed in multiple languages and carried burdens that were not originally ours. In those moments, Bonhoeffer\u2019s words rang true: <em>\u201cThe church is the church only when it exists for others.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the Gospels, Jesus forms a community that stands with the poor, the mourning, the meek, the sick and the forgotten. Solidarity is an act of standing together \u2013 the strength that makes the body of Christ whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May the Mennonite World Conference global family in 2026 embody this firm, united, Christ\u2011like solidarity with courage and joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u2014Sunoko Lin is the MWC Treasurer and serves with the Officers.
