{"id":124109,"date":"2026-02-12T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/?p=124109"},"modified":"2026-02-11T19:07:23","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T19:07:23","slug":"begin-with-prayer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mwc-cmm.org\/en\/stories\/begin-with-prayer\/","title":{"rendered":"Begin with prayer\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cIt was wonderful to begin this year praying together,\u201d said Willi Hugo&nbsp;Perez&nbsp;after January\u2019s online prayer hour.&nbsp;\u201cMay God encourage and strengthen the spirit of unity and peace in our beloved Anabaptist Mennonite family throughout the world.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 80 people gathered on Zoom at 14:00 UTC on 16 January&nbsp;2026 to pray together&nbsp;at Mennonite World Conference\u2019s bimonthly event.&nbsp;The featured&nbsp;presentation was an&nbsp;update&nbsp;video from a&nbsp;Mennonite&nbsp;pastor in Venezuela.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After opening prayer, Scripture and&nbsp;the featured&nbsp;presentation, members&nbsp;are&nbsp;divided into small groups according to language and spend the next 35-40&nbsp;minutes praying together as they feel led.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\" style=\"margin-right:0;margin-left:0\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div style=\"top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\">\t\t\t\t<iframe title=\"OPH-Jan26-Venezuela\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;\"  data-src=\"https:\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/photos\/55090508479\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the close,&nbsp;all participants join back into the main&nbsp;room&nbsp;and the group leaders offer a brief report.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme of prayers from the breakout rooms was for peace in the world:&nbsp;for elections, power transitions, refugees, people displaced for natural disasters, power issues in global politics&nbsp;and also&nbsp;in the church.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had seven people from six countries&#8230;\u201d&nbsp;Each&nbsp;group leader begins their&nbsp;report with the number of countries represented&nbsp;in their room.&nbsp;For example, one English room reported praying together in&nbsp;English,&nbsp;Hindi&nbsp;and German.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At January\u2019s event, prayers for&nbsp;Iran, USA, Venezuela, Colombia, Gaza,&nbsp;Ecuador, Hong Kong (60 people died and&nbsp;1000 people lost their homes in an apartment tower fire) \u2013&nbsp;were raised in many rooms.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe prayed&nbsp;for unity of people&nbsp;in&nbsp;churches with all the political polarization that tends to reflect itself in distancing and&nbsp;disunity,\u201d&nbsp;said one breakout room leader.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe prayed&nbsp;for economic stability&nbsp;as it&nbsp;is important for people\u2019s survival and keeping families together,\u201d&nbsp;said another.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Hindi group where members gathered from five different&nbsp;national churches, they prayed for&nbsp;a&nbsp;member&nbsp;that&nbsp;recently elected a new executive committee. The leaders&nbsp;face the challenge of reconciling&nbsp;with groups that have separated from the&nbsp;national church.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Pentecost babble of greetings erupts when the formal program is over as Anabaptists from around the world greet friends on the other side of the screen.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As these greetings cross over each other, Thomas R Yoder Neufeld&nbsp;dropped a prayer into the chat:&nbsp;\u201cLet\u2019s not forget to pray for&nbsp;MWC that we would live into the unity and peace of Christ as we face our differences.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-soft-blue-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Continue with solidarity&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>May our prayers move us to action.&nbsp;In 2026,&nbsp;Mennonite World Conference focuses on solidarity.
